Concerto Concert

Playing a concerto movement with a full symphony orchestra is a fantastic and rewarding experience for any musician and the Nelson Symphony Orchestra offers this experience to young aspiring concert soloists up to 22 years of age and, for 2010, current or past Nelson residents of any age.

2010 Concert

The 2010 Concerto Concert will be held on Saturday September 18, 2010 at the Nelson School of Music starting at 7.30pm and conducted by Mick Dowrick.

2011 Concert

The date of the 2011 Concerto Concert is yet to be announced.

How to apply

Applicants need to be Grade 8 standard or above on their chosen instrument. The application is completed online and a reference/recommendation is required usually from a teacher or professional colleague.

Repertoire

Soloists must ensure that the orchestral parts for the chosen concerto are available for hire in New Zealand. The National Library catalogue is a good place to start as the NSO will only hire orchestral parts from overseas in very exceptional cases. The entry fee will be returned if the application is unsuccessful.

2010 Closing Date

The closing date for the 2010 Concert is Friday May 28, 2010.

2011 Closing Date

The closing date for the 2011 Concert is yet to be announced.

Travel and Accommodation

Travel and accommodation costs are the responsibility of the applicant. There are a number of motels close to the Nelson School of Music or billets can be arranged if requested on the application form. Host families will ensure transport to and from rehearsals and provide meals.

Rehearsal Schedule

Soloists are required to attend the scheduled rehearsals from the Wednesday or the Thursday of the week leading up to the concert. Local soloists will also be offered additional rehearsal times with the orchestra earlier in the rehearsal period if appropriate.
