QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY WEEKEND 28 MAY - 1 JUNE 2009

A group of Nelson Symphony Orchestra players are organising this event and are now calling for registration from interested string players. Professional musicians from Wellington have been engaged as tutors and will also perform as a string quartet. Note, this was planned for 2008 but there was insufficient notice given, resulting in minimal applications. We hope it can run in 2009, please respond if you are interested. We need a critical mass of applicants to make this happen!

Format

The programme will commence at 6pm Thursday 28 May and conclude on Monday 1 June after breakfast. Participants can either come as a fully-formed quartet with own music or register individually and be placed in a quartet on site. Mornings will be given over to quartet practise supervised by the tutors and quartets will perform their chosen work - probably one movement - at a concert on Sunday night. Afternoons will be free for recreation, individual practise and string orchestra.

Costs

Full accommodation per person at Kimi Ora for the weekend including breakfast, lunch and dinner will cost $417. However, the accommodation units have kitchens and an option is for participants to provide their own breakfast or both breakfast and lunch, which would reduce the cost to $365 and $320 respectively. It is expected that everyone would share the evening meal in the restaurant.

There will also be a charge to cover the cost of tutors and this has been calculated at about $100 per person but may reduce as a result of sponsorship applied for and will also be affected by the number of participants.

Standards

It is expected that players will be of Grade V standard or above and have had some experience of playing chamber music or in an orchestra.

Registration

There will be a deposit of $20 to register for the school. The balance of the cost of running the school will need to be payed by each player before the weekend commences.
