Concerto Concert
The Concerto Concert has become one of the most enjoyed concerts of the Series. Every year audiences and orchestra members alike are astounded by the quality and virtuosity of the performers taking part. Performing a concerto movement with a full symphony orchestra is a fantastic and rewarding experience for any musician and the Nelson Symphony Orchestra offers this opportunity to young aspiring concert soloists up to 22 years of age from anywhere in New Zealand and in addition, a limited number of places for current or past Nelson residents of any age. Applicants need to be Grade 8 standard or above on their chosen instrument.
2011 Concert
The 2011 Concerto Concert will be held on Saturday September 3, 2011 at the Nelson School of Music starting at 7.30pm and conducted by Mick Dowrick.
How to apply
The application is completed online at any point up to the closing date Friday May 20, 2011 using the form below. Soloists must ensure that the orchestral parts for the chosen concerto are available for hire in New Zealand and are asked to provisionally book the conductor's score and orchestral parts with the holding library before making the application. The National Library catalogue is a good place to start searching. Please note that the NSO will only hire orchestral parts from overseas in very exceptional cases.
Recording and Entrance Fee
Applicants are required to send a recent CD recording of the chosen movement (preferably with piano accompaniment) along with a cheque for $50 made payable to ‘Nelson Symphony Orchestra’ to the secretary John Hudson, 27 Surrey Road, Richmond, Nelson 7020 to arrive before the closing date Friday May 20, 2011. The entry fee will be returned if the application is unsuccessful. Piano concerto recordings using a second piano to provide orchestral parts should ensure that the solo part is distinguishable in the recording.
Travel and Accommodation
Travel and accommodation costs are the responsibility of the applicant. There are a number of motels close to the Nelson School of Music or billets can be arranged if requested on the application form. Host families will ensure transport to and from rehearsals and provide meals.
Rehearsal Schedule
Soloists are asked to attend the scheduled rehearsals from the Wednesday or the Thursday of the week leading up to the concert. Local soloists will also be offered additional rehearsal times with the orchestra earlier in the rehearsal period if appropriate.
We look forward to receiving your application!
